Description
This is a Budd Company aluminum (with wood steps) upper berth ladder. It is stamped with the car name, "EAGLE CHASM" which was built in 1949 by the Budd Company for the Missouri Pacific Railroad. It is also stamped with the letter "E" which would be for Bedroom E (the second window on the left in the last photo, showing car as it appears today). The car is currently owned by the Texas Railroading Heritage Museum in Houston, TX. EAGLE CHASM was originally built as a 10 Roomette, 6 Bedroom Pullman sleeping car used on the railroad's overnight "Eagle" service trains. This ladder has seen some wear, but is in decent condition. The main rail frames on the very top are slightly tweaked and bent, but could be carefully straightened to make the ladder square again. The step carpeting is original (1950's/60's) wool rug with a green, cream and grey pattern. Structurally, the ladder is sound and sturdy. There are normal wear marks on the frame with a few minor nicks in the metal. The top and bottom hoops and brass mount plates were rubber coated, but are losing some of the rubber. Somehow, over the course of this sleeping car's life, the ladder parted ways and became part of the set of ladders on my Budd sleeping car (Seaboard Air Line Budd 10/6 WEST PALM BEACH). It is an extra ladder for me and do not need it. PLEASE -- LOOK AT ALL PHOTOS! These photos are high resolution and will give you a detailed view of the condition. If you have any questions, feel free to post and ask.
