    Description

Old and Scarce UNION PACIFIC Cast Brass Hardware
This dates from before around 1908, when financier E. H. Harriman instituted his "common standard" scheme across all the lines he owned. After 1908, for about 50 years, most of this type UP hardware were marked "CS 1" -- these are the ones you'll usually find on eBay today. Those that pre-date the CS 1 designation are much harder to find.
This particular model is the earliest version of the broad-shouldered body used on the CS 1s, stamped PAT APPLIED FOR on the shackle and with about eight inches of hand-forged twisted iron chain. (The later CS 1 versions have machine-made steel chains.) It was presumably made by Adams & Westlake, but there's no maker's stamp. It just has a great patina, and displays really nicely, even with the ding on the right side.
Now the bad news: it doesn't close. The latching spring doesn't work, and neither does the spring in the keyhole cover. The clevis is frozen, too. But I've had an offer from a highly recommended repair artist to fix it for about , and I'm happy to pass his name and others on to the buyer. Similar early Union Pacific pieces in good condition have recently sold for at least 0 on eBay.
The shipping price shown here includes 0 worth of insurance. Insurance at full value is an additional .70. Please let me know before paying if you're opting for full insurance.
